Christian Rother

My work is on the poetry of Stéphane Mallarmé and mathematics. To this end, the first half of my thesis attempts to give a history of the relationship between the two by examining a range of key figures such as Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, Alain Badiou, Jean-Claude Milner and Quentin Meillassoux. In the second half, I propose a reading of Mallarmé’s poetry alongside various motifs extracted from the history of modern and ancient mathematics. My thesis is entitled ‘Mallarmé and Mathematics: On Nothing and the Infinite’.

'Rhythmic Modernism: the mimesis of life itself in the short fiction of D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf'

Attention to the question of rhythm in early twentieth-century literary culture shows that, contrary to many accounts of modernism as anti-mimetic, many writers considered textual rhythms to function quite literally as mimicry of the rhythms of the universe. My doctoral thesis investigates this rhythmic literary phenomenon in the modernist short fiction of D. H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, and Virginia Woolf.
